Marcel Ignatius

Hai, Apa kabar?

(translation: Hi, how are you?)

Thank you for visiting my website. I’m Marcel, currently a Research Fellow at Department of Building, National University of Singapore. I’ve been working in the research area, with specific interest in urban micro-climate, sustainability, climate change, and green design. Coming from architectural education, I started to look into how the buildings that we created actually affect the surrounding, and eventually, the climate itself. Humans have been changing the landscape of the earth, especially post-industrial revolution, where urbanization, productivity, and this phenomena called ‘growth’ have forever alter the our lives, for better or worse.

Hence, some of the research topics that I have been involved in has been looking into how man made structures (buildings, roads, or even parks) affect the surrounding environment (we called it micro-climate, or in other words: the the climate of a very small or restricted area). In what way? Well, there are several ways, one of the pertinent issues is urban heat island (city is hotter than its rural areas), and thermal comfort. Urban densification has been the symbol of ‘growth’ and ‘efficiency’, but it also harms the environment (cities have become one of the main carbon emitters).

Are you still here? If yes, feel free to browse through some of research works and publications that I have been involved in for the past few years.
